Old Mission Church Sutherland

Official sources lack information which allows determination of the exact date on which the first congregation for Coloured people was established in Sutherland. Some are of the opinion that the first pastoral couple arrived in 1905. In 1864, however, the council of the Dutch Reformed Church had already decided that a place of worship should be erected for "de Kleurlingen". In 1882 the Mission Church already had a verger, who received a salary of two shillings a month from the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1892 a small church, which may still be seen at the corner of Van der Merwe and Primrose Streets, was built for the Mission congregation. The "Old Mission Church" in Acacia Ave (today the hall of the United Reformed Church) was built at a cost of 800 pounds and dedicated, by the Mission congregation, on 8 March 1913. The new church building of the URC was built at a cost of R28 000 and dedicated in 1973.
