Radar station

Sutherland Radar Station was erected on Swaarweerberg in 1991 to fill the gap in radar observations between Bloemfontein and Cape Town. Air traffic, height, speed and direction can now be accurately determined within the radius of a couple of meters. With the result that shorter flying times and faster routes can be determined. The radar station is unmanned and the information regarding flight positions are transmitted via satellite to Cape town and Johannesburg for use by air traffic controllers. Aircraft positions are constantly monitored since take-off to landing, between these two cities.
