Verlatenkloof

During the Anglo-Boer War, women and children from Bo-wadrif, Kareerivier, Blouheuwel and Klipbanksrivier were captured in the Tankwa Karoo area and transported to Sutherland by ox wagon, where they were kept as prisoners- of-war.

One day, while the Boers and the British soldiers were busy shooting on each other, a girl got such a fright that she hid away under a wooden bed. By accident she stuck her head into a bucket full of animal (sheep) fat. The place was named after this incident - Vetemmersdrif. (Directly translated as "fat bucket drift").

The steepest region on the Verlatenkloof Pass is on the top, with the name "Dankie-en-asseblief. ("Thank you-and-please"). "Thank you" because the wagons could get up the pass, and "please" that in future the trek over the mountains will be successful again.

It is believed that the old stone building (Ou Stasie) is very spooky.
