Old Dam

According to tradition the Old Dam has been in existence since 1873. In 1875 the dam wall was raised by a metre, as citizens of the town feared that it would break, should heavy rains fall. Further repairs were made in 1898, at a cost of £75. At a council meeting in 1899, it was decided to declare a “Dam Holiday” whenever the water overflowed, owing to good rains. This custom prevailed, even when a New Dam was built in April 1918.
